Other Conundrums

Some problems don't have a neatly-packaged solution. Sometimes you can't quite put your finger on what the problem is. And sometimes there isn't exactly a problem, just a sense that things could be somehow better.

It can be difficult to know where to start and that's where an independent perspective can help. If you have an issue related to people's performance at work, Caroline can help you clarify what it is you're trying to achieve and give you some suggestions on ways forward.

Unlike some larger consultancies, she doesn't have an 'off-the-shelf' solution to sell, just an enquiring mind, a wealth of experience and access to up-to-date research.

Examples of problems Caroline has been asked to look at include:

  • Reviewing the way employment consultants at a leading 'Welfare to Work' provider diagnosed the real problems stopping their long-term unemployed clients from working.
  • Exploring the reasons why some new entrants in a medium-sized company thrive in the job while others struggle and looking for ways to tell them apart at the interview stage

Caroline will also tell you if you're asking the wrong question. For example:

  • A network marketing company asked how they could select more successful distributors (i.e. salespeople). Caroline pointed out that, in a network marketing model, your distributors are also your customers, so you're not in a position to select. You just take everyone and look at what you can do to facilitate high performance throughout the organisation.
  • The FD of a medium-sized business wanted to implement Personal Development Plans for all the company's employees. Discussions with Caroline revealed that this was a solution in search of a problem and the real issue - how to 'raise everyone's game' - required a more nuanced approach.

Caroline says "If I can help, I will. If not, I'll try to point you in the direction of someone who can help. In any event, it's worth a conversation."

Several years after Caroline's review of our diagnostic processes we are still using many of her recommendations, which have made a big difference to the way we work. She didn't just deliver what we asked her for because she didn't believe it was what we needed and she was right. Andrew Wood, Finance Director, Rock Roofing
